Please believe in me

One of the greatest compliments I have ever had in my life was from a group of school girls in a class that I had taught. They said to me, "Mrs Philips we like you because you are always so fair."
I tried not to have favourites and I tried to give each child an opportunity to excel at what they were good at. I think people appreciate fairness because you can be valued and accepted for you and you alone, you do not have to prove that you are better than someone else.

One day a young boy around eight years old, approached my desk with a picture he had drawn of Freddie Kruger, knife stuck in someone's body and blood dripping down the body and onto the floor. He was hoping to shock me. When I saw it I jumped up out of my seat and let out a huge gasp and said, "Henry that is the best drawing I think I have ever seen, it's fantastic, look at the detail, look at the colour."

Henry just stared at me, aghast at my response. In fact by then the whole class was staring at me, the classroom had gone very quiet indeed. Then I began to question him, "Do you like drawing?" To which he replied, "Oh yes Mrs Philips." And so began his career in my classroom of drawing and drawing and more drawing. He changed his attitude towards school and towards work. When I left at the end of the year his mother came to see me. She told me that no one had ever shown an interest in Henry before, and this is the happiest she has ever seen him.
